While some people say “Laughter is the best medicine,” most narcoleptics would fear the concept of laughing. Narcolepsy is a illness wherein the individual suffers from irrepressible sleepiness. They drift off to sleep at the most inconvenient occasions. Being ecstatic, getting shocked, laughing out loud and pretty much any abrupt movement can trigger the attacks.

Narcolepsy has 4 major signs and symptoms: extreme daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (losing muscle tone), sleep paralysis and hallucinations. It applies to both women and men and usually begins within the teenage years. Young children could also be afflicted but it’s rare particularly for children under the age of 5. It is a developing sleep issue that develops gradually. Based on Narcolepsy Network, 1 out of 2,000 individuals in the U.S. experience narcolepsy. Unfortunately, the ratio of awareness of this sleep disorder may perhaps be lesser. That is why the characteristic behavior of narcoleptics are often times misunderstood. People who are at risk of narcolepsy sometimes take about ten to fifteen years before the very first symptoms are discovered. The reason being the symptoms are similar to other disorders and sleep problems. It is also an extremely rare sleep disorder so people would conclude the symptoms to be some other sickness other than narcolepsy.

Unfortunately, narcolepsy has no treatment yet. It can only be managed by taking medication, having a change of lifestyle and therapy. Medications can include stimulants, anti-depressants and medicines that help you sleep much more soundly during the night. Change of lifestyle can include keeping a regular sleep routine and steering clear of activities that could trigger narcolepsy condition. Food and beverage including liquor, products with caffeine and large meals must also be avoided.
